Scientists from the universities of Stockholm and Oslo found that some areas of the Sun's surface are dark because they are just much cooler.
While the science is very far from knowing how does it work the star, this work helps to unravel its secrets. The study in Science magazine that various hot and cold currents of gases would be responsible for those dark areas.
Know the mechanism that generates these freckles is important because it is believed that they act magnetic structures are responsible for shooting of solar activity on the surface.
Scientists observed in the deeper layers of the solar atmosphere and that determined, using computer models, how convection occurs in gases in the dark areas.
Warm air currents rising from the interior to the surface and disperse losing temperature. These cold gases to the surface again entering the solar atmosphere through each black dot, leaving the trail of darkness. The results also confirm that the penumbra or the tiny hairs that surround the points are the traces of lighter gas columns.
